It is the smallest and least populated province in the entire country. The region takes its name from its capital city, Opole. It sits as part of the larger Silesia area. To its south, it shares a border with the Czech Republic. The region is bordered by several other Polish provinces like Lower Silesian and Silesian Voivodeships.

It is a place where different cultures meet and live together.

The land here has many different shapes and feels. The Oder River cuts right across the middle of the province. In the north, you will find thick, dense forests near the Mała Panew River. The southern part of the region is filled with flat, fertile land for farming. You can also find mountains in the southwest, such as the Opawskie Mountains.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. The area became part of the Polish state in the 10th century. Later, local leaders from the Piast dynasty held seats in towns like Opole and Brzeg.

The modern version of this province was created on January 1, 1999. Before this, the government wanted to split the region into two other provinces. However, the local people protested because they loved their home. Both Polish and German residents wanted to keep their specific regional identity. This helped ensure the province stayed together as one unit.

Today, many interesting facts define this busy region. About 15% of the one million people living here are ethnic Germans. Because of this, 28 communes use both Polish and German as official languages.
