The Oder is a very important river in Central Europe.

It starts in the Czech Republic and flows through western Poland. Much of the river forms a border between Poland and Germany. This border is known as the Oder–Neisse line.

The river is the second longest river in Poland. It is only shorter than the Vistula river. It is also longer than the Warta river. The river eventually flows into the Szczecin Lagoon. From there, it reaches the Baltic Sea through three different branches.

A river grows larger as smaller rivers flow into it. These smaller rivers are called tributaries. The Warta is the longest tributary of the Oder. It is 808.2 kilometers long. Other tributaries include the Bóbr and the Lusatian Neisse. The Bóbr is 279 kilometers long on the left side. The Lusatian Neisse is 252 kilometers long. Many other smaller rivers like the Barycz and the Opava also join the Oder. These rivers help fill the huge basin that the Oder drains. This basin covers 230,000 square kilometers of land.

People have used the Oder for a very long time. Ancient Romans knew the river as the Viadrus. They used it as part of the Amber Road. This was a famous trade path to the Roman Empire. In the year 990, the river was part of the Polish state. Many important cities grew along its banks over the centuries. Wrocław is the largest city on the river. Opole was once the capital of Upper Silesia. Another city, Lubusz, was called the key to the Kingdom of Poland.

The river has seen many changes in who controls the land.

Humans have changed the river to help boats travel. This is called navigation. In the 1700s, Frederick the Great helped change the river. He wanted to make it straighter near a swampy area called Oderbruch. This helped turn marshland into farmland. Later, engineers built canals to connect the river to other places. The Finow Canal connects the Oder to the Havel river. The Oder–Spree Canal connects it to the Spree river in Berlin. These paths allow large barges to move goods between cities.

Some parts of the river are free-flowing, while others are controlled by canals.

The Oder is a busy place for water travel today. The river reaches the major maritime port of Szczecin.

Large ships can travel as far upstream as the town of Koźle. This is possible because of the Gliwice Canal. The river is a vital link for many different countries. It connects the industrial areas of Poland to the sea. However, the river must also be protected. In August 2022, the river faced a hard time when it became contaminated. This caused many fish to die. Keeping the water clean is important for everyone living nearby.
