It sits within the Yorkshire and the Humber region. Many different places border this area. To the north and east lies North Yorkshire. To the south are South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Greater Manchester is to the south-west. Lancashire sits to the west. The county is made of five main boroughs. These are Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, and Wakefield. They work together through a group called the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The land changes a lot as you travel through it. The western part sits in the South Pennines. This area has steep valleys and hills.

History has shaped the towns and cities here. Long ago, people worked in coal, wool, and iron industries. These jobs brought many people to the area over many centuries. You can still see this history in the old buildings. The Industrial Revolution helped cities like Leeds and Bradford grow very large. Leeds became a city in 1893. Bradford gained city status in 1897.
