It is located within the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The county shares borders with several other areas. To the north and east, it meets North Yorkshire. To the south, it borders South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Greater Manchester lies to the south-west, while Lancashire is to the west.

The landscape of the county changes significantly from west to east. The western portion sits within the South Pennines. This area features steep-sided valleys and high ground.

A small part of the Peak District National Park also extends into the south-west of Kirklees. As you move east, the terrain becomes much flatter. The eastern boundary sits on the edge of the Vale of York. Geologically, the area sits on carboniferous age rocks.

These rocks form the South Pennine fringes and the Yorkshire coalfield.

Water plays a major role in shaping the West Yorkshire environment. The River Calder is a primary watercourse in the region. It begins in the western hills and flows east. The river passes by the city of Wakefield. Eventually, it meets the River Aire near Castleford. The River Aire itself flows through the city of Leeds. In the far east, the land contains Magnesian Limestone deposits. This creates an elevated ridge with smoothly rolling scenery and dry valleys.

Historically, industry transformed the West Yorkshire landscape. The area was known for coal, wool, and iron ore industries. These sectors attracted many people to the region over many centuries. The Industrial Revolution caused massive growth in major settlements. Leeds and Bradford grew into the area's two largest cities. Leeds was granted city status in 1893. Bradford followed in 1897. You can still see this industrial heritage in the local architecture and buildings.

Administrative structures in the county have changed over time. Before 1974, the area was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The metropolitan county of West Yorkshire was officially created in 1974. In 1986, the metropolitan county council was abolished. This meant functions were moved to local boroughs or joint boards. Since April 2014, the area has functioned as a combined authority.

These are Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, and Wakefield. The city of Leeds is the largest settlement in the county. The conurbation of Bradford, Dewsbury, Halifax, Huddersfield, Leeds, and Wakefield is very large. It is the fourth-largest built-up area in the United Kingdom. The population density varies greatly between the urban centre and the rural outer areas.

West Yorkshire is a place where urban life and nature meet. Dense networks of motorways like the M62 and M1 traverse the land.

You can also find heritage railways and canals. The mix of hills and valleys creates dramatic views. Some areas are famous for literature and folklore. The Brontë family wrote famous novels near Haworth. Other parts of the county are known for beautiful country estates and parklands. This creates a unique blend of busy cities and quiet, open countryside.
