It sits in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The county has many different types of land. The west part has steep valleys and hills. These hills are part of the Pennines.

In the east, the land becomes flatter. The east edge sits near the Vale of York. Rivers help shape the land. The River Calder flows past the city of Wakefield. It then meets the River Aire near Castleford.

Many people live in the busy towns and cities. Leeds is the largest city.

Bradford is also a large city. Other big towns include Halifax, Huddersfield, and Wakefield.

Long ago, people worked in coal, wool, and iron mines. You can still see old buildings from those times. Some parts of the county have green belts. These are areas of open countryside.
