It sits in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. This place shares borders with many other areas. It touches North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire to the north. To the north-east lies the East Riding of Yorkshire. It also borders Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and West Yorkshire.

The land changes a lot depending on where you stand. In the west, the ground rises into high hills. These hills are part of the Pennines. Much of this area is inside the Peak District National Park.

As you move east, the hills turn into rolling farmland. The land eventually becomes very flat in the Humberhead Levels. Rivers like the Don, the Rother, and the Dearne flow through these lands.

Nature and industry work together in this county. The high hills in the west provide water for many things. For example, the River Don starts in these hills. It flows east through Sheffield, Rotherham, and Doncaster. Under the ground, there are layers of coal and iron. This is called the South Yorkshire coalfield.

People used these resources to build big industries. The coal and iron helped people make steel. Because the coal and iron were close together, it was a great place for making steel. This work helped many towns grow into big cities.

People have lived here for a very long time. Scientists found traces of a prehistoric home at Deepcar. This stone circle dates back to around 8000 BC.

Even older traces exist nearby in the caves of Creswell Crags. Those items are at least 12,800 years old. Later, the Roman Empire reached this region as a frontier. Most of the main towns grew because of mining and steel. The coal mines were mostly in the north and east. The steel works were often near the rivers in the west. This history of work shaped how the towns look today.

South Yorkshire is made up of four main areas. These are called metropolitan boroughs.

Doncaster is located in the east. Barnsley is found in the north. These four areas work together through a group called the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. They share things like police and fire services to keep everyone safe.

Today, the county is a mix of many different sights. You can see busy urban areas with many buildings. You can also find quiet, green countryside and farms. There are many old mine buildings and steel plants still standing. Some areas are used for recreation, like the Rother Valley Country Park.

The county also has a unique culture. It is the only county that is a full region for the Spiritualists' National Union. Whether you visit the high hills or the flat levels, there is much to see.
