The name Sheffield comes from the River Sheaf. In Old English, the name meant "open countryside near the River Sheaf." This is because the river once marked a boundary between kingdoms.

This city is a very green place to live. About 61 percent of the total area is green space. One third of the city sits inside the Peak District national park.

There are more than 250 parks, woodlands, and gardens here. It is estimated that the city has around 4.5 million trees. This makes it a very lush and natural place. Many people enjoy the many trees and hills.

Sheffield played a huge role in the Industrial Revolution. In the 1800s, the city grew very fast. This happened because of the cutlery trade. New ways to make high-quality steel were also invented.

One method used a special process called crucible steel. Another way was making silver plating called Sheffield plate. Because of these industries, the population grew almost tenfold in the 19th century.

History can be difficult for a city. During the 1940s, Sheffield was hit by heavy bombing. This was called the Sheffield Blitz.

Many buildings were damaged or destroyed. Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, many steel mills closed. This was because of competition from other countries. Coal mining in the area also stopped during this time.

Today, the city is changing and growing again. New projects are making the city center look fresh.

There are many new public spaces like the Winter Gardens. Sheffield is also a very famous place for sports. It is home to Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest football club.
