Lincolnshire is a very large county in England.

It sits across two different regions called the East Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber. To the north, the Humber estuary separates it from the East Riding of Yorkshire. The North Sea forms its border to the east. Many other counties sit nearby, such as Norfolk to the south and Nottinghamshire to the west.

Because it is so big, the land looks very different depending on where you stand.

The ground changes as you travel through the county. In the south-east, you will find the Fens, which is a marshy area. Some parts of these Fens are actually below sea level. To the north-east, the land rises into the Lincolnshire Wolds. These are rolling chalk hills that people call a national landscape.

In the west, a long ridge called the Lincolnshire Edge runs north and south. A wide vale also stretches through the middle of the county.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Before the Romans arrived, the Corieltauvi people lived here. Later, the Romans built a major settlement called Lindum Colonia. This place eventually became the city of Lincoln.

In the fifth century, the Angles arrived and settled the region. They even started a kingdom called Lindsey in the north. For many years, the whole area was known by that name.

History has left many special marks on the land. In the late Middle Ages, the wool trade brought a lot of money here. This wealth helped people build grand buildings like St Botolph's Church in Boston.

During the Second World War, the flat land was useful for planes. The Royal Air Force used the county as a base. This earned Lincolnshire the nickname "Bomber County."

Even the famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton was born here at Woolsthorpe Manor.

Today, Lincolnshire is a place of both nature and industry. You can visit nature reserves like Donna Nook or Gibraltar Point.

The county is split into different areas for local government. Some parts are managed by seven districts. Others are managed by two special areas called unitary authorities. These groups work together to look after the whole county.
