It is a landlocked place, which means it has no coast. Many other counties sit around its borders. To the north are Leicestershire, Rutland, and Lincolnshire. To the east lies Cambridgeshire. To the south are Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Oxfordshire is to the southwest, and Warwickshire is to the west.

The county is made of many different areas. Some parts are rural with lots of open countryside. Other parts are more industrial with busy towns.

The land is famous for its low, rolling hills. These hills are mostly found in the west. The highest point is Arbury Hill, located near Daventry.

These hills are the starting point for several rivers. The River Nene is the most important river here. It starts in the southwest and flows northeast. It passes by the towns of Northampton and Wellingborough. Other rivers like the Avon, the Welland, and the Cherwell also flow through the region.

The land even sits between two different water systems. It holds the watershed between the River Severn and The Wash.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. During the Iron Age, people built hill-forts like Hunsbury Hill.

Later, the Romans arrived in 43 AD. They built a road called Watling Street through the county. They also built settlements in places like Towcester and Northampton. After the Romans left, the Angles and Saxons settled the land. They made the area part of a kingdom called Mercia. Later, the Danes and Vikings also controlled parts of the county. In the Middle Ages, many famous battles happened here. These included the Battle of Naseby in 1645 during the English Civil War.

Northamptonshire has many important towns and cities. Northampton is the largest settlement and sits in the centre. Other big towns include Corby and Kettering in the northeast. Wellingborough is another principal town in the middle.

In the 1800s, the county was a major centre for making shoes. This was part of the leather industry. Later, the town of Corby became a large centre for making steel. Today, the county has small industrial centres too. These places focus on engineering and making food.

This county is often called the land of "spires and squires." This name comes from the many tall church towers and grand homes found there.

It is also a place that connects to the wider world. For example, the family of George Washington moved from here to America. His ancestor, John Washington, left in 1656. This shows how people from Northamptonshire traveled far away. Even today, the area remains a busy and important part of England.
