It was located in parts of what we now call southern Scotland and North West England. Welsh tribes called this large area Yr Hen Ogledd, which means "the Old North." At its largest size in the 10th century, the kingdom was very wide. It stretched from Loch Lomond in the north down to the River Eamont at Penrith.

This kingdom played a big role in the history of the British Isles.

Life in the kingdom changed as time went on. In the early days, the land was called Alt Clud. The people lived around a strong capital called Dumbarton Rock.

However, a Viking army from Dublin attacked and captured the capital in 870. After this hard event, the people moved their capital to a place called Govan. This was when the name of the kingdom changed to Strathclyde. The kingdom then grew to include the Cumbrian Mountains.

Many different groups of people lived near the Cumbrians. The people of the kingdom spoke a language called Cumbric. This language was very similar to Old Welsh.

Some Anglo-Saxons lived nearby and called the land Cumbraland. There were also some Vikings and Norse-Gaels in the area. Even before the kingdom was fully formed, tribes like the Damnonii lived there. These people had their own capital at Carman Hill near the River Clyde.

History shows that the people of Strathclyde were very brave. In the year 642, a leader named Eugein son of Beli led a victory. His army defeated the men of Dál Riata at a place called Strathcarron.

This was a major win for the Britons of Alt Clut. They also had famous kings like Coroticus in the 5th century. Coroticus was a Christian king who received a letter from Saint Patrick. These stories help us understand how the people lived and fought.

Eventually, the kingdom began to change into something new. In the 11th century, the Kingdom of Alba took over the land. This meant Strathclyde became part of the growing Kingdom of Scotland. The boundaries of the old kingdom were marked by natural things like rocks and marshes. One famous marker was Clach nam Breatann, or the Rock of the Britains. Even though the kingdom is gone, its story is still part of the land today.
