The people there spoke a language called Cumbric. This was like Old Welsh.

In the year 870, a Viking army attacked the capital. After this, the capital moved to a place called Govan. The kingdom then became known as Strathclyde. It grew to cover parts of Scotland and England. At its biggest, it reached from Loch Lomond to the River Eamont.

Many different groups lived near the kingdom. Some were Anglo-Saxons and some were Vikings. The people of Strathclyde were called Cumbrians. They were often at war with neighbors. For example, in 642, they won a big battle at Strathcarron. Later, in the 11th century, the kingdom changed. It was taken by the Kingdom of Alba. This meant it became part of the new Kingdom of Scotland.
