He was born around the year 810 on the island of Iona. His father was a king named Alpín mac Echdach. Alpín was the leader of a land called Dál Riada. This land was in the western part of what we call Scotland today. After his father died, Kenneth became the King of Dál Riada around 840 or 841. He had to lead his people through a very hard time.

Kenneth's life was filled with many big changes and battles. His land was very mountainous and hard to travel through. The land was often poor for growing food. Also, Viking raiders from Scandinavia were attacking his borders. These problems may have pushed Kenneth to look for more land. He began a campaign to take control of the Pictish lands. He fought many battles to win these areas. Some people even gave him the name "The Conqueror" because of this.

History tells us how Kenneth brought different groups of people together. He ruled the Picts as their king starting around 843. He moved his center of power to a place called Forteviot. Kenneth also moved important items to new homes to keep them safe. One very famous item was the Stone of Scone.

He moved it from the island of Iona to Scone. This helped create a new sense of unity for his people. He even worked to make new laws for his kingdom.

Many things happened during his long time as a leader. Kenneth fought against the Britons from the Kingdom of Strathclyde. He also fought the Vikings who were raiding his lands. He even led six invasions into a place called Lothian. To make his kingdom stronger, he used royal marriages. He married his daughters to kings in Ireland and Strathclyde. These connections helped his new dynasty, the Alpínid dynasty, to stay in power. This family ruled for a very long time.

Kenneth is often called the founder of Scotland.

At that time, the new land was called Alba in the Gaelic language. While he was called King of the Picts, he helped start a new nation. His work helped the Scots and the Picts become one people. This caused the Pictish language and ways to slowly disappear. Kenneth died in February 858 at Forteviot. His brother, Donald I, became the next king after him. His family continued to rule for many years to come.
