At first, the kingdom was not as big as Scotland is today. It sat between the Firth of Forth and the River Spey. Over many years, it grew to include places like Dalriada and Fortriu. The people living there were mostly Pictish-Gaels. This name describes their mixed culture. Later, new groups called Scoto-Normans joined the kingdom. This period of history was a time of great change for the land.

Running a kingdom required many different jobs. The royal court had many people to help the king.

One important person was the Hostarius. He was the man in charge of the royal bodyguard. Another person was the rannaire, who divided the food for the court. The Chancellor worked in the royal chapel and kept important records. The Chamberlain was in charge of the kingdom's money. There were also special roles for hunters, foresters, and cooks. These people worked together to keep the royal household running.

Early kings helped build the foundation of Alba. Donald II was the first leader called the King of Alba in 900. He spent much of his time fighting battles against Vikings. After him, Constantine II ruled for nearly fifty years. He is remembered as a key figure in forming the kingdom. Constantine also worked with Bishop Ceallach to change the church.

This helped the Scottish church join with the larger Gaelic world. His long reign helped the kingdom find its shape.

As time passed, the kingdom grew through battles and new rules. King Indulf helped the Scots take a fort called Edinburgh. This was a big step for the kingdom's reach. Later, King Malcolm II won a major battle in 1018. This victory happened at the Battle of Carham. He also met with King Canute of Denmark around 1031. These events helped the Scots control more land in the south. The kingdom became much stronger through these many years of growth.

King Malcolm III was another leader who changed Scotland. He was often called "Canmore," which means "Great Chief." He had many children from two different marriages. Through his wife, Margaret of Wessex, he brought Benedictine monks to the land.

However, his reign also brought tension with the rulers in England. After he died in 1093, the English kings began to interfere more. This led to many changes in how Scotland was ruled. The era of Alba eventually ended after the death of Alexander III.
