It sits near several other places like Berkshire and Surrey. To the south, the Isle of Wight lies across the Solent. Much of the land is made of undulating hills. A belt of white chalk rock crosses the county from north to south. This chalk forms the Hampshire Downs and the South Downs.

Many important rivers rise in these high hills. The Loddon and Wey rivers flow north toward the Thames. The Itchen and Test rivers flow south into Southampton Water.

Nature and towns make the county very interesting to visit. The south-west holds the New Forest, a huge area of ancient woodland. This forest has many fields, heathlands, and trees.

In the south, the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth are very close together. They form a large built-up area. Other main towns include Basingstoke in the north and Winchester in the centre.

The rest of the county is mostly rural and green. You can see many different landscapes across the region.

People have lived in Hampshire for a very long time. Some people settled here about 14,000 years ago.

During the Iron Age, people built hillforts on high ground. One famous site is called Danebury Rings. Later, the Romans arrived and made Hampshire part of Britannia. They built important roads like Ermin Way and Port Way.

The Romans also built forts, such as Portchester Castle.

This fort is one of the best-preserved Roman forts in the area.

History changed many times as new groups moved into the land. After the Romans left, groups like the Jutes and Saxons arrived. The West Saxons eventually made Hampshire part of their kingdom. Winchester became a very important capital city during this time.

By the 12th century, the ports began to grow very fast. This happened because people were trading wool, cloth, and fish. They also became very good at shipbuilding. This work made the port towns much larger than inland towns. Southampton became more populous than Winchester by the 16th century.

Today, Hampshire is still a very important place for many reasons. Its ports played a big role during the World Wars.

Many people from this area also traveled far away. In the 17th century, colonists left England to go to North America. They liked their old home so much they named a new land New Hampshire. This connects the history of England to the history of America. The county remains a mix of busy cities and quiet countryside.
