Middlesex was a historic county located in England.

It was quite small for a county. In fact, it was the second smallest in the whole country. The name tells us about its history. It means the land of the Middle Saxons. This group of people lived there during the early Middle Ages.

The county had very clear borders made by nature. The Thames river sat in the south. The Lea river marked the east. The Colne river was in the west. A line of hills formed the northern edge near Hertfordshire.

As the years went by, the area changed a lot. The City of London was once part of Middlesex. However, the City became its own special area in the twelfth century. This created some tricky problems for local leaders. It was hard to manage roads and justice. The City of London wanted to stay within its own lines. But the growing city kept spreading into the rural parts of Middlesex. This made the southeast part of the county very crowded.

Many people lived in the East and West Ends of London.

In the 1800s, new things began to change how people lived. Railways were built across the land. These trains helped people move to the northwest suburbs. New industries also started to grow in the area. Because of this, more people moved to the county. The Metropolitan Police also began to work here in 1829. By 1840, the whole county was part of their district.

Managing the busy areas became a very hard job. Some parts even used special boards to help with building things.

New laws changed how the county was run. In 1889, a large part of Middlesex became the County of London. This took away about twenty per cent of the land. It also took away a third of the people. The rest of the area was managed by the Middlesex County Council.

They met at the Middlesex Guildhall in Westminster. The county was divided into many smaller districts. Some were rural and some were urban. These districts helped manage the many growing towns.

Everything changed again in 1965. A new law created Greater London. This new area included almost all of the old Middlesex land.

Some small pieces of the historic county ended up in Surrey or Hertfordshire instead. Even though it is not an administrative county anymore, its history remains. You can still see signs for the old county today. The story of the Middle Saxons lives on in the name. It is a place where the old country meets the big city.
