Middlesex was a historic county in England.

It was the second smallest county in the country. Its name comes from a group of people. They were the Middle Saxons. They lived in this area a long time ago.

Three rivers marked the edges of the land. The Thames river was in the south. The Lea river was in the east. The Colne river was in the west. A line of hills marked the north.

As time passed, the city of London grew. The city spread into the rural parts of Middlesex. New trains and roads helped people move there. More people lived in the southeast part of the county.

This area became very crowded.

In 1965, the county changed. Most of the land became part of Greater London. Some small parts are now in Surrey or Hertfordshire. You can still see signs for the old county today.
