It was one of seven big kingdoms in England. Many people moved there in the 5th century. Most of these settlers came from Old Saxony.

The kingdom covered many places. It included parts of modern Essex and Middlesex. It also held London and Colchester.

The kings of Essex were special. Almost all their names started with the letter S. Some kings ruled at the same time. For a long time, other kings ruled over them. These leaders came from Kent or Mercia.

Religion changed in Essex too. At first, many people were pagans. Later, they became Christians. St Cedd helped spread this faith. He built monasteries in the land. But things changed often. Sometimes the people went back to their old ways.

By the 8th century, Essex lost some land. Mercia took control of many parts. In 825, the last king was Sigered. He gave the kingdom to the King of Wessex. Later, the land became part of England.
