Wessex was a kingdom in southern Great Britain. It began around the year 519.

Some stories say Cerdic and Cynric founded it. These stories might just be legends.

Many kings ruled Wessex over the years. King Cenwalh made the land a Christian kingdom. Later, King Ine wrote one of the oldest law codes. He also set up a second place for church leaders.

In the 800s, things became very hard. A Danish army arrived to fight. King Alfred the Great had to protect his people. He was a very smart leader. Alfred built ships and a strong army. He also made a system of fortified towns called burhs.

Alfred's son, Edward, won back more land. Then Edward's son, Æthelstan, conquered the north. This made England one single kingdom for the first time.

Later, a leader named Cnut the Great ruled the area. In 1066, the land changed again. Wessex was no longer its own kingdom. It is a big part of history.
