They are located near the south coast of Brittany in France. These sites include rows of stones, stone tombs, and burial mounds. There are more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones in this area. Most of these stones are made from local granite. They form the largest collection of such stones in the world.

These stones are very important to history. They show us how people lived a long time ago.

There are different types of stone structures at Carnac. Some stones stand in long rows called alignments. Others are single stones known as menhirs. Some stones form tombs called dolmens. These dolmens often had large stones on top. People also built tumuli, which are mounds of earth over a grave.

These mounds often had a passage leading to a central chamber. This chamber held special items from the past. These different shapes show the many ways people used stone. Each structure served a special purpose for the community.

People built these stones during the Neolithic period.

Some stones may date to 4500 BC. Others were likely put up around 3300 BC. Experts still debate who exactly built them. Some think they were built by hunter-gatherer people. Others think they were made by early farmers. Local legends tell different stories about the stones. One legend says a wizard named Merlin turned Roman soldiers to stone. Another story says they were soldiers chasing a Pope. These stories show how much people wonder about the past.

There are three main groups of stone rows.

The Ménec group is the most famous. The Kermario group has 1,029 stones in ten columns. The Kerlescan group has 555 stones in 13 lines. The Kermario group is about 400 meters long. The Kerlescan stones range from 0.5 to 2 meters in height. Some large burial mounds are also found here. The Saint-Michel tumulus is a very large mound. It was built between 5000 BC and 3400 BC. It required a huge amount of stone and earth to make.

These ancient sites connect to many things we know today.

We can see how far people traveled long ago. Some jade axes found in tombs came from the Italian Alps. Blue beads called callaïs came from far away in Iberia. These items arrived by boat across the Bay of Biscay. This proves that ancient people were great travelers and traders. Today, we work hard to protect these special places. Some stones were once used for roads or buildings. Now, they are protected historical monuments for everyone to see.
