It is a place with a very strong sense of identity. The land is known as the home of the Breton people. They are part of the six Celtic nations. Some people even call it "Little Britain." This name comes from the same roots as Great Britain. The area covers about 34,023 square kilometers of land.

Life in Brittany has changed many times over thousands of years. Long ago, the land was part of a region called Armorica. This name likely means "close to the sea."

After the Roman Empire fell, many people from Britain moved there. They were looking for a new place to live. This movement helped shape the local culture and language. Eventually, Brittany became its own independent kingdom. Later, it was a duchy. In 1532, it was finally united with the Kingdom of France.

Today, the historic area is split into five different departments. These include Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan, and Loire-Atlantique.

The history of the land goes back to the very beginning of human life. Humans have lived here since the Lower Palaeolithic period. Some very old groups of people were called Neanderthals. Later, Homo sapiens arrived about 35,000 years ago. As the climate became warmer, the land grew thick with trees. People stopped hunting and gathering to become settled farmers. They brought new skills through slow immigration and trade.

This era led to the building of amazing stone structures. Many of these sites are found in the Morbihan area.

Some of these date back to the early 5th millennium BC. One famous site is the Cairn of Barnenez. Another is the Tumulus Saint-Michel. In the Morbihan area, you can find the Carnac stones. There is also the Broken Menhir of Er Grah. This is the largest single stone ever stood up by Neolithic people.

The culture is still very special because of its history. You might see bilingual road signs written in both French and Breton.

People still speak different versions of the Breton language. Some groups even work to keep the land's independence or more freedom. The connection to the sea remains a huge part of life. You can see this in the fishing boats and the busy ports.
