It sits in the southwest corner of the country. The region touches the Atlantic Ocean along its coast. To the south, the Pyrenees mountains form a border with Spain.

Today, it is part of a larger area called Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The region is made of five different departments. These are Dordogne, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes, and Gironde.

Long ago, the Romans created a province here called Gallia Aquitania. The name might come from the Latin word for water, "aqua."

Before the Romans, people called the Aquitani lived in this land. They were not like the Celtic people nearby. They were more like the Iberians. Many think they spoke an early form of the Basque language. Basque is special because it is the last non-Indo-European language in western Europe. It has even influenced Spanish and French over time.

In the Middle Ages, Aquitaine changed many times. It was once a kingdom and a duchy. The boundaries of the land moved around quite a bit. In the year 1137, the region passed to France when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Louis VII.

However, her marriage ended in 1152. When she married Henry II of England in 1154, the land became English. The English kings ruled Aquitaine until 1453. This happened at the end of the Hundred Years' War.

During the English rule, the region became very important for trade. Large amounts of wine were sent from the southwest to England. These wines went to ports like London and Southampton. The profits from this wine were a main source of income for the English King.

Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the region was a home for the Huguenots. These were Protestants who faced hard times under French Catholic rule. They even asked the English crown for help during this period.

Today, about 3,150,890 people live in Aquitaine. It is the sixth most populated region in France. Bordeaux is the largest city and serves as the capital.

It is a famous port on the Garonne River. People in the region love many different sports. They enjoy football, rugby, and basketball. Some people also enjoy bull-fighting and surfing. While most speak French, many people in the south still speak Basque.
