Occitania

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Occitania is a large cultural area in southern Europe.

Most of this land sits in the southern third of France. It also reaches into parts of Spain, such as the Aran Valley. You can find pieces of it in Monaco and the Occitan Valleys of Italy.

The area is famous because of a special language called Occitan. This language was once called la langue d'oc. The name comes from how people said the word for "yes." Today, the region has a population of about 16 million people. Between 200,000 and 800,000 of them are native or proficient speakers of Occitan.

Understanding Occitania involves looking at how language and land mix together. The name "Occitania" likely came from a French clerk. He blended the name of the language with the name of the land. In the Middle Ages, people often called it the country of the Occitan language.

This area is not just one single country. Instead, it is a way to group people who share a culture. Many people there also speak French, Spanish, Italian, or Piedmontese. In the Aran Valley, Occitan has been an official language since 1990. In Catalonia, it became an official language in 2006.

The history of this land goes back many centuries. During the Roman Empire, much of this area was called Aquitania.

Other parts were known as Provincia Romana, which is where modern Provence is located. Under the late Roman Empire, these places were grouped into the Seven Provinces. In the Early Middle Ages, the land was part of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse. Later, it was part of the lands held by Louis the Pious in 806. These old names helped shape the cultural identity we see today.

Occitan culture was very bright during the High Middle Ages.

Many writers and poets lived in this region. These famous poets were called troubadours. They used the Occitan language to write beautiful works. Their poems often focused on themes of courtly love. They also shared ideas about being tolerant of others. This period helped make the Occitan language a tool for great art. It was even used as an official writing language in the Kingdom of Navarre.

Today, Occitania connects many different modern places.

While the cultural area is huge, a smaller part is an official administrative region in France. In 2016, the French government merged two regions to create Occitanie. This new region is only a small part of the whole cultural area. People in the land still feel a strong bond to their roots. A study showed that most people define Occitania through its language and culture. It remains a place where history and modern life meet.
