Occitania

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Occitania is a significant cultural and linguistic region located in southern Europe.

It is not a single country with fixed borders. Instead, it is a concept defined by shared language and history. The area covers much of the southern third of France. It also includes the Aran Valley in Spain, parts of Italy called the Occitan Valleys, and the territory of Monaco.

Because it is defined by culture rather than politics, its exact size can vary depending on who is measuring it. Some historians look at where the language was spoken in the 19th century. Others look for a single, continuous area of speakers.

The identity of the region is tied to the Occitan language. Historically, this was called la langue d'oc. This name comes from the specific sound of the word for "yes" in that language. The term "Occitania" likely formed as a portmanteau. This means a word was created by blending two other words together. A French clerk likely combined the name of the language with the name of the land, Aquitania.

This linguistic connection is so strong that the name describes both the people and the place.

The history of Occitania stretches back to ancient times. During the Roman Empire, much of the region was known as Aquitania. Other parts were called Provincia Romana, which is the root of the modern name Provence. Under the late Roman Empire, these territories were grouped into the Seven Provinces. In the Early Middle Ages, the area was part of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse. It was also part of the lands held by Louis the Pious in 806.

These ancient political structures helped form the foundation of the region.

Occitan culture reached a peak during the High Middle Ages. This was a time when the language was used for great art and literature. Famous poets known as troubadours used Occitan to write their works. Their poetry often focused on the concept of courtly love. They also promoted ideas of social tolerance and religious respect.

The language was even used as an official scripta, or writing system, in the medieval Kingdom of Navarre. This shows how widely the language was used for official business.

Today, the region is home to approximately 16 million people. However, the number of people who speak Occitan is much smaller. Estimates from the French Demographics Institute suggest between 200,000 and 800,000 people are native or proficient speakers. Most people in the area now speak French, Spanish, Italian, or Piedmontese. Despite this, the language holds official status in certain places. In the Aran Valley, it has been official since 1990. In Catalonia, it gained official status in 2006.

Modern political lines sometimes overlap with this cultural map. In 2016, the French government created a new administrative region called Occitanie. This was done by merging the Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon regions. It is important to note that this official French region is only a small part of the larger cultural Occitania.

While the administrative borders are strict, the cultural feeling of the land remains much broader.

Sociological studies help us understand how people view this region today. A study conducted in the late 1970s looked at how people define themselves as Occitans. The results showed that 95% of people define the area by its language. About 94% define it by its culture. A smaller number of people, around 50%, see it as a specific ethnic group. Only 20% of those surveyed viewed it as a nation.

This shows that for most, the heart of Occitania is found in its words and traditions.
