Occitan is a Romance language spoken in several parts of Europe.

Its speakers live in southern France and parts of Italy. They also live in the Val d'Aran in Spain. These connected regions are often called Occitania. The language is closely related to Catalan. Some people call it Provençal. This name refers to the Provence region in southeast France. Occitan is a language with a very large vocabulary. A massive dictionary called Lo Panoccinari contains over 250,000 unique words.

Some versions of the language include more than 310,000 words when counting dialectal variations.

Writing Occitan is a complex process because there is no single standard. It does not have official status in France, where most speakers live. Instead, writers use different systems called norms. Some norms are pan-dialectal, meaning they try to cover many dialects at once. Other norms focus on just one specific local dialect. This difficulty exists because the dialects have many differences. They differ in their vocabulary and their phonology, which is the system of sounds.

Because of these variations, creating one unified written form is a major challenge.

There are six major dialects of Occitan. Four of these are considered severely endangered by UNESCO. These four are Provençal, Auvergnat, Limousin, and Languedocien. The other two dialects are Gascon and Vivaro-Alpine.

Gascon is a unique dialect that is spoken in the Val d'Aran. In that region, a subdialect called Aranese is an official language. Since September 2010, the Parliament of Catalonia has preferred Aranese for official use. This shows how specific dialects can hold great local importance.

History shows that Occitan has deep roots in the Mediterranean. The language grew from Vulgar Latin after the Romans arrived in Southern France.

One of the oldest written records dates back to the year 960. This record shows people using Occitan to answer Latin songs. In the Middle Ages, Occitan was a language of great prestige. It was the language of the troubadours, who were famous poets and singers. Their poetry was celebrated in many royal courts across Europe. Even English royalty, like Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, spoke Occitan as their mother tongue.

The name "Occitan" has a very specific origin. It comes from the word "oc," which means "yes."

The Italian poet Dante was the first to record this name in writing. He used it to distinguish the language from French and Italian. The name likely comes from the Latin word "hoc," meaning "this." Over time, many different names were used for the language. People called it Limousin or Languedocien depending on the region. Today, linguists use those names only for specific local varieties.

Occitan faced many challenges that caused it to decline. In 1539, a French law required French to be used for all administration. This reduced the official use of Occitan. The French Revolution also caused a major decline in the language. During that time, having many different languages was seen as a threat. Later, World War I caused more disruption for speakers. Many people spent long periods speaking only French with their comrades. Despite these struggles, there was a literary renaissance in the late 19th century. This movement helped keep the language alive through poetry and books.

The development of Occitan was shaped by its unique geography. It is surrounded by mountains and seas. The Mediterranean, Atlantic, Alps, and Pyrenees act as natural borders. These barriers helped the language develop its own distinct character. It also has a separate lexicon from its neighbors. Occitan kept about 550 Latin words that disappeared in other Romance languages. It also lacks much of the Germanic influence found in French. This makes it a very special link in the history of European languages.
