It is often called Mediterranean Europe because of the sea nearby. The region is mostly made of three large peninsulas. The Iberian Peninsula sits in the west. The Italian Peninsula is in the middle. The Balkan Peninsula is in the east.

These areas stick out into the blue Mediterranean Sea. High mountains act like walls around them. The Pyrenees, the Alps, and the Balkan Mountains separate the south from the north.

These mountains change how the weather works. Most of the area has a Mediterranean climate. This means the land has dry hills and pine forests. You can see many olive trees growing there.

Some places are much cooler. The high Alps can even have ice caps. In Italy, a hot wind called the Sirocco blows from the Sahara. This wind travels all the way to the Po Valley. Other winds like the Mistral blow near France. These winds can push cool water up from the deep sea.

Some islands like Sicily and Crete are also part of these regions. Nine of these countries belong to the EU Med Group. Even though the land is divided, many people share a culture. Most people there speak Romance languages. Many people also follow the Roman Catholic faith.

Southern Europe links the past to our modern world. The ideas from the Renaissance started in places like Florence. These new ideas changed science and art for everyone. The region also helped connect the world during the Age of Discovery. This era helped Southern Europe reach places like Latin America. Today, the area is a mix of old traditions and new growth. It remains a place where history and nature meet.
