It was made of four departments called Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne. This area included old provinces like Angoumois, Aunis, Saintonge, and Poitou. The city of Poitiers served as the regional capital.

Other important cities were La Rochelle, Niort, Angoulême, and Châtellerault. Many people also lived in Saintes, Rochefort, and Royan. On January 1, 2016, it joined Aquitaine and Limousin to become Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Life in the region relies a lot on the land and sea. Farming is a very important part of the local economy. Farmers grow crops like wheat and corn in the fields. They also raise cattle on their farms. Some businesses there make dairy products and machines. Other industries produce chemicals for different uses. This mix of farming and industry helps the region work.

History in this area goes back a very long time. A Gallic tribe called the Pictavi lived there first. The Romans conquered them in 56 BC. Later, the Visigoths took the land in 418 AD. Then the Franks took control in 507. In the year 732 or 733, Charles Martel fought a big battle in Poitiers. This battle helped stop a Muslim invasion of Western Europe. Later, Eleanor of Aquitaine brought the land under English control in 1152.

There are many interesting facts about the people and places here. The residents were known as Picto-Charentais. In 2003, the region was 15th in population out of 26. It was 12th in size for area. Some people speak local languages like Poitevin, Saintongeais, or Occitan. A famous woman named Françoise-Athénaïs was born there in 1640. She was the mistress to King Louis XIV. Some of her descendants are still alive today.

This region has a deep link to North America. During the 17th and 18th centuries, many people moved away. These immigrants settled in places like Canada and Louisiana. They became the Acadian and Cajun populations. They built lives through farming and fishing in the New World. Some people call the area Acadia after a place in Greece. Others think the name comes from the Mi'kmaq language. It means fertile land.
