The Isthmus of Chignecto is a very important strip of land.

It sits between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. This narrow path connects the Nova Scotia peninsula to the rest of North America. It acts like a wall between two different bodies of water. On one side is Chignecto Bay, which is part of the Bay of Fundy. On the other side is the Northumberland Strait. The name Chignecto comes from the Mi'kmaq word for 'drainage place.' This name describes the way water moves through the area.

Most of the land here is very low and flat. You would see many wet places like the Tantramar Marshes. There are also mud flats, tidal rivers, and saltwater marshes. Some areas have freshwater marshes or mixed forests. While most of it is low, there are some high ridges. These include the Fort Lawrence Ridge and the Aulac Ridge. There are also the Sackville and Memramcook Ridges in New Brunswick. The eastern side near the Northumberland Strait is mostly covered in trees.

Because this land is so narrow, it has been a key path for travel. Long ago, French and British colonists built military roads across the ridges. In 1872, the Intercolonial Railway was built to connect Halifax and Moncton. This railway crossed the Tantramar Marshes between Amherst and Sackville. Later, in 1886, another rail line went from Sackville to Cape Tormentine. In the 1960s, the Trans-Canada Highway was built here too. Today, large roads like Route 2 and Highway 104 help people move through.

This place has a very busy history with many different groups. The first European settlers here were the French. They lived in an Acadian farming community called Beaubassin. In 1713, the isthmus became a line between British and French lands. Both sides built forts on the high ridges to control the area. The French built Fort Beauséjour on the Aulac Ridge. The British built Fort Lawrence on the ridge just to the east.

Many battles happened here during wars like King William's War.

Today, people are working hard to protect this land from the sea. The isthmus uses dikes to keep the ocean water out. If the sea rose by 12 metres, the land would flood. This would turn mainland Nova Scotia into an island. The dikes are at risk from big storms and erosion. The Canadian government and the provinces are discussing how to pay for repairs. The total cost to strengthen the dikes could be 650 million dollars.
