It sits in the Petitcodiac River Valley near the center of the Maritime Provinces. The city is located along the north bank of the river. The river makes a very sharp bend at this spot.

This shape is why many people have given the area different names over time. The Mi'kmaq name for the river means "bends like a bow." Early French settlers called the area "Le Coude," which means "the elbow." Later, English immigrants called it "The Bend."

The river has a very special and exciting feature called a tidal bore.

This is a regular wave that travels up the river. It happens because of the extreme tides in the Bay of Fundy. This wave moves on the leading edge of the incoming tide. It is one of the few examples of this in North America. The river valley around the city is broad and mostly flat. It is tucked between Lutes Mountain to the north and the Caledonia Highlands to the south.

Moncton has a long history of changing and growing.

Acadian settlers first arrived in the area around the 1670s. Later, in 1766, German-origin settlers from Pennsylvania arrived to farm. In the mid-1840s, people began building wooden ships here. This shipbuilding business grew very large by 1847. A man named Joseph Salter ran a huge shipyard there. His shipyard employed about 400 workers at one time. The city was officially named Moncton in 1855 after a British officer.

The city is often called the "Hub City."

This name comes from its history as a center for travel. In 1871, the Intercolonial Railway chose Moncton as its headquarters. This made the city a major center for trains for many years. The city even had large shops to repair locomotives. Even when the shipbuilding industry collapsed in the 1860s, the city found new ways to grow. The city's motto is "I rise again" to show this strength.

In 2025, the city's population reached 102,378 people. This was the first time a city in New Brunswick had more than 100,000 residents. The whole metropolitan area has nearly 196,143 people. Moncton is also Canada's first officially bilingual city. This means people use both English and French. The economy is very strong now. It includes many things like health care, schools, and technology.
