The landscape changes a lot depending on where you go. In the north, the land is cold arctic tundra near the Hudson Bay coastline. You might even see polar bears in those northern areas.

The southern part of the province is made of wide prairie grasslands. This variety makes the land very interesting to explore.

Many different types of people have lived in Manitoba over a long time. Indigenous peoples have lived on this land for about 10,000 years. Groups like the Cree, Ojibwe, and Dene built settlements here. They even farmed corn along the Red River long ago. In the 1600s, English and French fur traders arrived to start settlements. They built many forts to trade furs with local people. These traders competed with each other for many years.

History shows how Manitoba became a part of Canada. In 1673, the area was called Rupert's Land. It was run by the Hudson's Bay Company for a long time. Later, there were disagreements between the government and the Métis people. This led to a conflict called the Red River Rebellion. To solve these problems, leaders negotiated a new way forward. On 15 July 1870, the Manitoba Act was passed. This made Manitoba the fifth province to join the Canadian Confederation.

Water plays a huge role in life in Manitoba. The Red River flows through the southern part of the province. Huge floods have happened there in the past. One very big flood occurred in 1950. To keep people safe, workers built the Red River Floodway.

This large path helps move water away from homes. People also built dikes and dams to help protect the land. These structures help the province handle heavy rains and melting snow.
