This region sits just north of the United States border. It covers about 29% of all the land in Canada. About 32% of all Canadians live in these western provinces.

People from this area are often called Westerners. They are often seen as having a unique culture and way of life. This is different from people living in the rest of Canada.

The land changes a lot as you travel from west to east. British Columbia sits on the west coast by the Pacific Ocean.

It is home to the Canadian Rockies, which are huge mountains. These mountains form a continental divide that splits the land. To the east of the mountains, the land becomes much flatter. These flat areas are known as the Canadian Prairies.

Most of the prairies are used for growing grain. However, some parts like the Alberta Badlands are quite hilly.

The weather in the west can be very different depending on where you are.

The coast of British Columbia has a mild climate because of the ocean. Winters there are usually wet but not very cold. In contrast, the prairie provinces have much harsher weather. They experience very cold winters with strong Arctic winds. Summers in the prairies can be very hot. Alberta can even have warm Chinook winds that raise temperatures in winter.

History tells us how this land became part of Canada. Many Indigenous nations lived here long before Europeans arrived.

The British government later made treaties with many First Nations. Between 1871 and 1899, many Numbered Treaties were signed on the prairies. Most of British Columbia was never ceded to the Canadian government. Early European settlers were often French-Canadian fur traders. Later, the British government transferred lands from the Hudson's Bay Company to Canada. This helped form the provinces we know today.

Many people live in busy cities across the western provinces. Vancouver is the largest metropolitan area in the region.

Between 2011 and 2016, cities in Alberta and Saskatchewan grew very fast. Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon were among the fastest-growing areas in the whole country. This shows that many people are moving to the west.
