The Canadian Prairies are a huge region in Western Canada. This area includes three provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Much of the land is made of flat plains and lowlands. You might see many types of grasslands here. These include tallgrass, mixed grass, and fescue prairies. Some areas have different shapes in the land, like the badlands in Alberta.

The region is part of the Great Plains. It is also part of a larger area called the Interior Plains.

The weather in the prairies can be quite extreme. Most of the area has a semi-arid climate. This means some parts are very dry. One dry area is called Palliser's Triangle.

In the summer, the weather can bring big thunderstorms. These storms can even cause tornadoes. About 72% of all tornadoes in Canada happen in the prairies. This happens because the flat land allows air to mix easily. Manitoba gets the most rain, while Saskatchewan gets the least.

History shows how people have used this land for a long time. First Nations people have lived in this region for thousands of years. Later, many people moved here from places like Ukraine, Germany, and Scandinavia. They came to farm the rich soil. In the early 1900s, a special type of grain changed everything. It was called Marquis wheat. This wheat grew faster than older types. It could be harvested before the cold autumn frost arrived. This helped farmers avoid losing their crops.

Today, the prairies are very important for Canada's economy. The region produces 80% of the country's food through farming. Farmers grow crops like canola, oats, barley, and wheat.

Besides farming, the region is known for oil. Since the mid-20th century, an oil boom has brought many jobs. This helped Alberta become a very wealthy province. In Saskatchewan, people also find things like uranium and potash in the ground. These resources help the region grow.

Many people live in busy cities across these provinces. Calgary and Edmonton are large cities in Alberta. Winnipeg is a major city in Manitoba.

The population in these three provinces grew by 4.6% between 2016 and 2021. This means over 6.7 million people live here now. The region connects many different things, from big lakes to deep oil wells. It is a place where nature and industry work together.
