geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Great Plains is a huge area of flatland in North America.

This region sits just east of the Rocky Mountains. It stretches far across the central United States and into western Canada. Much of the land is covered in prairies and grasslands.

Because the air is often dry, trees do not grow easily here. This creates wide views where you can see for a long way.

The land changes in many different ways as you travel. In the north, the ground is often uneven with small hills. You might even see the Black Hills in western South Dakota.

In the middle, there is a place called the Badlands. The dry weather and rain have carved tiny valleys into the earth there. The central part of the plains was once covered in sand and gravel. Rivers moved these materials to create a smooth surface.
