The Maritimes is a special region in eastern Canada.

It is made up of three provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. This area sits right along the Atlantic coast. You can find water bodies like the Gulf of Maine and the Gulf of St. Lawrence nearby. The region is located northeast of New England in the United States. It is also south of the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec. The word maritime means "of the sea." This name fits well because the land sits right next to the ocean.

Long before modern towns existed, people lived on this land. The Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy people are indigenous to the Maritimes. Many thousands of years ago, glaciers retreated from the area. This allowed the first human settlements to begin. Later, different groups like the Abenaki Nation and the Mi'kmaq Nation organized into large groups. The Mi'kmaq lived in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and parts of New Brunswick. The Wolastoqiyik lived near the Saint John River valleys. These groups had been part of the land for a very long time.

European explorers arrived and changed the history of the region.

Viking explorers may have visited the area around 1000 AD. Later, explorers like John Cabot and Jacques Cartier sailed through these waters. Jacques Cartier claimed the land for the King of France. In 1604, Samuel de Champlain helped start a settlement on Saint Croix Island. This was later moved to Port Royal. This settlement became part of a place called Acadia. The Acadians were French immigrants who lived in these coastal areas. They often worked as farmers or fishermen.

History in the Maritimes was often marked by difficult wars.

Between 1689 and 1763, there were six colonial wars. These fights were often between the British and the French. One very sad event happened in 1755 called the Expulsion of the Acadians. The British wanted to stop the Acadians from helping the French. They forced over 12,000 Acadians to leave their homes in Nova Scotia. These people were scattered to places like Louisiana, Quebec, and even France.

Another major event was the siege of the large fortress at Louisbourg.

Today, the Maritimes is a peaceful part of Atlantic Canada.

In 2021, the population was about 1,899,324 people. This is about 5.1% of all the people living in Canada. The region follows the Atlantic time zone. This means they are one hour ahead of Quebec. The Maritimes are also linked to the rest of Canada through history. In 1864, leaders met at the Charlottetown Conference to talk about joining together. This meeting helped create the country of Canada that we know today. People still live in many of the same areas where these stories began.
