It is made of four provinces. These are New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The Atlantic Ocean sits to the east and south. Quebec is the large land to the west. The land has many rugged coasts and gravel beaches. You can also find mountains and thick forests there.

This region has a very long and busy history. The Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, Naskapi, Beothuk, and Nunatsiavut peoples lived here first. Long ago, Vikings explored the North American coast. Leif Erikson and his family arrived around 986 CE. They even built a small home called Vinland in Newfoundland.

Later, French leaders like Samuel de Champlain arrived in 1604. They made friends with many local indigenous groups. Eventually, Britain also gained control over much of the land.

Many different groups of people moved to this area over time. After the American Revolution in 1783, many Loyalists came from the United States. This group of people helped create the province of New Brunswick. Some Black Loyalists also arrived and settled in a place called Birchtown.

Later, many people moved from Ireland because of a potato famine. They often settled in port cities like Saint John and Halifax. These different groups helped shape the culture we see today.

Today, the people of Atlantic Canada work in many ways. The ocean is a huge part of life for them. Most ocean-related jobs in Canada are found in these provinces. Fishing is a very important job for many coastal towns.

People also make power from nature. Labrador has a huge system for making power from water. They also use wind and hydrogen to make energy. This energy can even be sent to other places.

There are many other natural riches in the ground here. The forests have been used for wood and making boats. People also mine for things like coal, salt, and iron. Nova Scotia produces more than 60% of the gypsum in Canada.
