Newfoundland sits in a very special spot in the ocean. It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River. This creates the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This gulf is the largest estuary in the world. An estuary is where a river meets the sea.

Many people live on this large island. In 2006, the population was about 479,105 people. Even though the island is big, most people live in one area. About 90% of the province's people live on the island. Most of them live on the small Avalon Peninsula in the southeast.

The capital city is St. John's. It sits on the southeastern coast. Just south of the capital is Cape Spear. This is the easternmost point of North America, if you do not count Greenland.

People have lived on Newfoundland for a very long time. The first inhabitants were the Paleo-Eskimo. Later, the Dorset culture settled there about 4,000 years ago. After the Dorset, the Beothuk people lived on the island.

The Beothuk people moved there from Labrador. They spoke their own language. The name Beothuk meant "people" in their language. The Inuit also hunted and fished around the island. They sometimes traveled to the Great Northern Peninsula. Many of these early groups left or died out long ago.

History shows that explorers found the island many times. The Norse people visited about 1,000 years ago. They built a base at L'Anse aux Meadows.

This is the only certain Norse site in North America. In 1497, John Cabot visited the island. He worked for King Henry VII of England. Later, Portuguese, Dutch, and French fishermen came to the island. They came to catch fish. In the 1500s, Humphrey Gilbert claimed the island for England. This made it a very early colony for the British.

Newfoundland is famous for its connection to the sea. For a long time, fishing was the most important job.

In the 19th century, many people spoke different languages. Some spoke English or French. Others spoke Irish or Scottish Gaelic. In the Irish language, the island's name means "Land of the Fish." This name shows how much people relied on the ocean. Today, the island remains a very important part of Canada.
