This area was its own administrative region for a long time. It was founded as a region in 1960. It was made of three departments named Corrèze, Creuse, and Haute-Vienne. On 1 January 2016, it became part of a new region called Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It also sits within the larger historical area of Occitania.

Not many people live in this part of France. In 2010, there were 742,770 inhabitants living there. This made it the least populated region in metropolitan France.

The people in the area have been changing over time. Until 1999, the population was actually going down. Between 1999 and 2004, the population grew a little bit. This was the first time it grew in many decades. The department of Creuse has the oldest population in all of France.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. It was once a traditional province of France. A Celtic tribe called the Lemovices lived here long ago. Their capital was at a place called Saint-Denis-des-Murs. In 2004, people found a main sanctuary in Tintignac. They found unique objects there like the carnyces. These objects are special to the whole Celtic world. A ruler named Viscount Aimar V of Limoges was also notable.

Many different languages and names are linked to this place. Until the 1970s, people in rural areas spoke Occitan. They spoke different versions called dialects. One was the Limousin dialect. Another was the Auvergnat dialect in the north and east. There was also the Languedocien dialect in the south of Corrèze. In a transition area called the Crescent, people spoke Marchois. These dialects were used to speak to one another.

You might know the name Limousin from other things. The word limousine comes from the name of this region. Long ago, a carriage roof looked like a shepherd's cloak. This cloak was worn by shepherds in the area. The region is also famous for its beef cattle. These animals are called Limousin cattle. You can see many communities like Limoges, Tulle, and Brive-la-Gaillarde. Limoges has beautiful half-timbered houses near its bridges.
