It is made up of four modern departments named Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saône, and Territoire de Belfort. This area sits near the country of Switzerland. Since 2016, it has been part of a larger region called Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This new region brings together two halves of the old Kingdom of Burgundy. It is actually the sixth largest region in all of France. In 2021, about 1,179,601 people lived in this area.

The land here has many different shapes and feels. To the north are the Vosges mountains and to the south are the Jura mountains. The Jura mountains are not as huge as the Alps, but they are very popular. People love to go cross-country skiing there. You can also find lovely nature trails for hiking on the gentle slopes. The valleys of the Doubs and Loue rivers have houses built on stilts. Many visitors enjoy the lakes for swimming during the warm months.

The history of this place goes back a very long time. People have lived here since the Paleolithic age. Later, the Gauls lived in the area before Germanic peoples arrived. The Burgundians settled here and brought Christianity to the region. For many years, the area was known as the Free County of Burgundy. It was part of the Holy Roman Empire for a long time. It was even ruled by the Spanish Habsburg family.

France eventually took control of the region in 1678. This happened after the War of the Quadruple Alliance. Before this, the area had many different rulers. One interesting fact is that it was one of the last places in France to have serfs. In 1784, about 400,000 people were still serfs. This meant they were tied to the land owned by lords. King Louis XVI tried to ban these rules in 1779. However, the local leaders in Besançon blocked the change until 1787.

Today, the region is known for many important things. It is a busy place for making goods like automobiles and car parts. The land is also great for farming and making food. A huge part of the farming is dairy and cattle. This helps the region make 40 million tonnes of cheese every year. You might recognize the famous Comté cheese from here. The region also makes tasty sausages and wine.
