Besançon is a beautiful city in eastern France.

It sits in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region near the Jura Mountains. The city is close to the border with Switzerland. It is built inside a large loop of the Doubs River. This loop is called an oxbow.

This river shape helps protect the city. The city is the capital of the Doubs department. It is also a major center for government and the army.

The city's unique shape helped it become a strong fortress. The river Doubs flows in a big circle around the town. A high hill called Mont Saint-Étienne closes the loop.

This hill is a very important part of the landscape. Because of these hills and the river, the city was easy to defend. Many forts sit on the six hills surrounding the center. These hills include names like Griffon and Chaudanne. The city even has a canal that cuts through rock under the hill.

Besançon has a very long and busy history.

Long ago, it was a town called Vesontio. The Sequani tribe lived there during the Gallo-Roman era. Julius Caesar even wrote about the town in his books. Later, the city was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was even a "Free Imperial City" for a time. In the 1600s, the famous engineer Vauban designed new walls. These fortifications are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Today, the city is a busy place with many people.
