It serves as the capital of the Constantine Province. The city is also the third largest in the whole country. About 450,000 people live in this growing area. It is a major center for business and trade in the region. Because it is so important, it was named the Arab Capital of Culture in 2015. People visit from many places to see its history and sites.

The city has a very special shape. It sits on a high plateau that looks quite dramatic.

A deep ravine cuts through the land here. The Rhumel River flows at the bottom of this canyon. Because of these deep gaps, the city needs many bridges to connect its hills. People often call it the "City of Bridges." There are seven bridges crossing the ravine. One is the Sidi M'Cid Bridge, which is a suspension bridge 168 meters long. Another is the Sidi Rached bridge, a long viaduct with 27 arches.

Constantine has a very long and changing history.

Long ago, it was called Cirta. It was the capital of the Berber kingdom of Numidia. In 112 BC, it was the home of King Jugurtha. Later, the Romans used the city as a base for their generals. After the city was destroyed in 311 AD, it was rebuilt in 313 AD. It was then named Constantina to honor Emperor Constantine the Great. Many different groups, like the Vandals and Byzantines, ruled the city over time.

In more recent years, the city has seen many changes. During the Ottoman period, a leader named Salah Bey built much of the Muslim architecture seen today. In 1826, Ahmed Bey became the last Bey of the city. He fought against French forces that invaded four years later. By 1837, France had captured the territory. A famous scientist named Charles Louis Laveran also worked in a hospital here in 1880. He discovered how a tiny living thing causes malaria. This discovery won him the Nobel Prize in 1907.

Today, Constantine is a place of learning and industry. It has many big universities, including the large Université Salah Boubnider. The city is also a hub for making things like textiles, leather, and wool. It sits in a region with a Mediterranean climate. This means the summers are hot and dry. The winters are usually mild and moist. You can travel through the city on a tram network that is 14.7 km long. This helps people move between the main neighborhoods and the airport.
