It serves as the capital of the Constantine Province. The city is also recognized as the capital of eastern Algeria. With a population of approximately 450,000 people, it is the third largest city in the country. This follows the larger cities of Algiers and Oran. Because of its deep cultural importance, it was named the Arab Capital of Culture in 2015. The city acts as a vital commercial hub for its entire region.

The physical geography of Constantine is defined by its dramatic topography. The city is situated on a high plateau. A deep ravine frames the urban area, creating a very picturesque appearance.

The Rhumel River flows through the bottom of this canyon. This unique landscape necessitates the use of many bridges to connect different areas. Because of this, the city is often called the "City of Bridges." There are seven bridges crossing the ravine to link the hills and valleys.

Several specific bridges are essential to the city's infrastructure. The Sidi M'Cid Bridge is a suspension bridge measuring 168 meters in length. Another important structure is the Sidi Rached bridge, which is a long viaduct. This viaduct spans 447 meters and features 27 arches. The Salah Bey Bridge is a modern addition to the skyline. It is the first cable-stayed bridge in Constantine. Other notable crossings include the Bab El Kantra Bridge and the Falls bridge, which sits atop a waterfall.

The history of the city spans many ancient civilizations. In antiquity, the city was known as Cirta. It served as the capital of the Berber kingdom of Numidia. In 112 BC, it was the seat of the Numidian king Jugurtha. Later, the city became a base for Roman generals during wars against Jugurtha. After a period of destruction in 311 AD, the city was rebuilt in 313 AD. It was renamed Constantina to honor the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.

Following the Roman era, different groups controlled the region. The Vandals captured the city in 432. From 534 to 697, it returned to the Byzantine Exarchate of Africa. After the Arab conquest in the 8th century, the name changed to Qacentina. The city later saw prosperous trade under Almohad and Hafsid rule. During the Ottoman period, the leader Salah Bey embellished the city. He built much of the Muslim architecture that remains visible today. Merchants traded textiles, leather, and precious metals during this time.

Constantine has also been a site of significant scientific discovery. In 1880, Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran worked at a military hospital there. He discovered that a protozoan is the cause of malaria. A protozoan is a tiny, single-celled organism. He observed these parasites in a blood smear from a soldier. This discovery was the first time a protozoan was linked to a disease. For this work, Laveran received the Nobel Prize in 1907. His research helped inspire scientists to find cures for malaria in animals.

Today, the city is a major center for education and industry. It hosts several large universities, including the massive Université Salah Boubnider. This institution is the largest university in Africa. The city also supports various industries, such as textile and leather production. It serves as a railhead for a diverse agricultural area. Residents and visitors can use a 14.7 km-long tram network. This network connects the city center to the main neighborhoods and the airport. The climate is Mediterranean, featuring hot, dry summers and mild, moist winters.
