Oran is a major coastal city in northwest Algeria. It sits west-southwest of the capital, Algiers. The city is a vital commercial and industrial hub. It is also a major cultural center for the region. Oran is the second most important city in Algeria. This status comes from its large population and economic power. In 2008, the city population was 803,329. The larger metropolitan area held about 1,500,000 people.

The name of the city is linked to a local legend. The word Wahran comes from a Berber expression. This expression means "place of lions."

Legend says Barbary lions lived in the area around AD 900. The last two lions were killed on a nearby mountain. This site became known as the Mountain of Lions.

Oran has seen many different groups rule the area. A small Roman settlement called Unica Colonia once existed there. Later, the Vandals and the Berbers of the Mauro-Roman Kingdom lived there. Arabs arrived at the start of the 8th century. The present-day city was founded in 903 by the Maghrawa Berbers.

The city flourished under the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min. He built thirty vessels to connect the city with Andalusia. Later, the Zayyanids of Tlemcen used the ports to trade with Spain. The historian Ibn Khaldoun called the city a paradise for trade. He said poor people who arrived would leave rich.

Control of the port led to many military conflicts. Spain captured the city in 1509 under Cardinal Cisneros.

Spanish rule lasted until 1708 when Algerian forces took the city. Spain returned in 1732 but lost control again in 1790–1792. This happened after a violent earthquake killed over 3,000 people.

A coalition of Algerian troops eventually won control from Spain. This ended the Spanish occupation of the city.

The French took control of Oran in 1831. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was the capital of the Département of Oran. The city's population changed during this time. By the early 20th century, Europeans formed a majority. During World War II, Oran was part of Operation Torch. This was an Allied action in late 1942.

In July 1940, the British navy shelled French warships in the port. They did this so the ships would not fall to the Nazis. This event changed how the world viewed the British fight against Germany.

The period leading to independence was very difficult. Before the Algerian War of 1954–1962, Oran had many Europeans. In July 1962, the FLN entered the city after a ceasefire. This led to the Oran massacre. In this event, between 95 and 365 people were killed. Many others disappeared. This caused a large exodus of Europeans and Jews to France. In 1962, most of these groups were repatriated to France.
