It is located southeast of the capital city, Tunis. As the second-most populous city in the country, it serves as a vital economic hub. The city is a center for international trade and industry.

The geography of the Sfax Governorate is characterized by a low, even relief. Most of the land consists of wide plains. These plains rarely exceed 150 meters above sea level. There is a coastal strip about 15 kilometers wide. This strip has an average altitude of only 20 meters. Some small hills and elongated mountain ranges called draâs exist in the west. The highest points, such as Draâ Lahirech, reach 269 meters.

The climate in Sfax is classified as hot semi-arid. This means the region is quite dry. Summers are hot and receive almost no rain. Winters are usually pleasant with only light rainfall. Sfax receives much less rain than Tunis. It also receives less rainfall than the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. The local hydrography is shaped by this flat topography. Many rivers are shallow and rarely reach the sea. Most are endorheic, meaning they flow into closed depressions called sebkhas or garâas.

Sfax has a complex history involving many different powers. The Aghlabids founded the modern city in AD 849. They built it upon the ruins of the ancient town of Taparura. The city also grew over the site of Thenae. In 1148, King Roger II of Sicily conquered the city. Later, Spanish forces occupied the area during the 16th century. The Ottoman Empire eventually took control of the region. In 1881, France established a protectorate over Tunisia. During World War II, Axis powers used Sfax as a base. British forces eventually took the city on 10 April 1943. Tunisia gained its independence from France in 1956.

The historic Medina is a central part of the city's identity. It was built by the Aghlabid prince Abu Abbass Muhammad between 849 and 851. The Medina is home to about 113,000 residents. It is dominated by the Great Mosque of Sfax.

The area is protected by stone walls. These walls are 2,750 meters long. They feature 34 dungeons and stand between seven and eleven meters high. Originally, the Medina had only two main gates: Bab Jebli and Bab Diwan. New doors were added in the 20th century to manage growing populations.

Architecture and culture are highly visible in the urban landscape. The Kasbah is a desert fortress located in the southwestern corner of the Medina. It once served as a control tower and an army barracks. Today, it functions as a museum of traditional architecture.

The Municipal Palace is another landmark. Designed by French architect Rafael Guy, it blends Arab-Moriscan and European styles. Construction began in 1905 and continued through various expansions. Visitors can also explore Dar Jallouli, a museum of arts and traditions.

The city also houses an archaeological museum in the municipal building.

Modern Sfax is a powerhouse of Tunisian industry. It is the largest fishing port in the country. The city also processes phosphate, olives, and nuts. The olive oil produced here is known for a unique quality. Education is a major pillar of the community. The University of Sfax includes several specialized institutions. These include the Faculty of Medicine and the National School of Engineers (ENIS).

These institutions support research in science, commerce, and the humanities. This combination of ancient history and modern industry makes Sfax a vital part of the Mediterranean world.
