As a coastal city, it serves as a vital hub for the Mediterranean region. It is currently the third-largest city in Algeria. The metropolitan area is home to approximately 1,000,000 people. This makes the area more densely populated than other Algerian coastal cities like Algiers or Oran.

The economy of Annaba is driven by several key sectors. It is a leading industrial center for the country. The city is particularly important for the global steel industry. This is due to the El Hadjar steel complex located to the south. This complex is the largest of its kind in Africa.

Other major industries include finance, transportation, and tourism. The city also supports phosphate and metal industries through the Seybousa and Allelik complexes. Many private businesses in the region focus on metal processing, wood products, and the agri-food industry. These economic activities provide essential services to eastern and southern Algeria.

Annaba has a long and complex history involving many different civilizations. The area shows evidence of very early human occupation at Ain el Hanech. Artifacts from around 200,000 BC show remarkable craftsmanship in toolmaking. The city first appeared in historical records at the end of the 3rd century BC. At that time, it was part of the Numidian Kingdom under Massinissa. The city was later known as Hippo Regius.

Throughout the centuries, many different groups ruled the region. The Vandals destroyed the city in the 5th century and ruled for about a hundred years. In 534 AD, the Vandal King Gelimer surrendered to the Byzantine general Flavius Belisarius. This brought Byzantine rule to the city, then called Hippona. Later, the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb occurred in 699 AD. Various groups like the Abbasids, Aghlabids, and Fatimids ruled the area known as Bona. The city was relocated to its present site following flooding and destruction in 1033.

The modern era of the city saw significant industrial growth. During French rule, the city was called Bône. Between 1856 and 1869, a sheltered port was constructed to handle iron ore. This ore came from the Mokta el Hadid mines. In 1864, the first railroad in Algeria was opened to connect the mines to the docks.

Production at the mines grew rapidly from 22,000 tonnes in 1865 to 255,000 tonnes in 1869. By 1924, the population had risen to 41,000 people. The port also began exporting zinc and lead ore during this time.

During World War II, Bône became a strategic location for Allied forces. In 1943, it was a major goal during Operation Torch. The U.S. and British armies used the city as a crucial highway and sea location. This helped the invasion of Tunisia and the eventual removal of Axis powers from Africa.

The city remained in Allied hands until 1945. It stayed part of French Algeria until the country gained independence in 1962.

Today, Annaba is a major center for tourism and education. The landscape includes mountains, hills, and plains. The mountains near Seraïdi are a popular attraction for mountain tourism.
