Oran has a very long history. Many different groups have ruled the city. These include the Romans, the Berbers, and the Arabs. Later, Spain and France also held control of the city. During World War II, the city was part of a large military action called Operation Torch.

Today, Oran is a busy center for trade. It has a major port for ships. The city also has three universities for students. Some parts of the city are very old. Other parts, like La Ville Nouvelle, are more modern. The weather is often hot and dry.
