It sits right at the edge of the Sahara Desert. Because it is the gateway to the desert, people call it "The Door of the Desert."

Some people also call it "The Queen of the Zibans." Others use the nickname "The Saharan Nice." This is because the city is a very popular place to visit during the winter.

The city is the capital of the Biskra Province. In 2007, the city had 307,987 people living there.

The land in Biskra is mostly flat, but mountains are nearby.

The Ziban Mountains and the Sfa Pass surround parts of the area. While the land can be very dry, there are green spots called oases.

These oases have water that helps many plants grow. Several waterways, like the Oued Labiod, flow through the region. The Oued Labiod flows down from the Aurès Mountains. This water helps to irrigate the many orchards and palm groves. The city itself is made up of 28 different neighborhoods.

Many different groups of people have lived in Biskra throughout history. The Gaetuli people were among the first to live in this part of North Africa. Later, the Romans ruled the area and fought many wars there.

The Vandals also invaded and occupied the land. In the 7th century, the Arab conqueror Uqba ibn Nafi al-Fihri arrived. He died in 683 AD during an ambush. His body was buried in a mosque in the city. This mosque is considered a very holy place in Islam. The Ottoman Empire also ruled the city for three hundred years.

Biskra has a very long and complex history of change. The French arrived in 1844 and made the city a military garrison.

There were many fights and rebellions during this time. For example, there was fighting in 1849 and again in 1871. Later, during the Algerian War of Independence in 1954, there were battles in the streets. The city's name has changed many times over the years. Some people think it comes from a word meaning "station." Others think it comes from the name of the sweet dates grown in the oases.

Because of its special location, Biskra has always been a crossroads. It connects the cities in the north of Algeria to those in the south. This made it a famous place for many famous people to visit. Artists and writers like Oscar Wilde and Henri Matisse spent time there.

The composer Béla Bartók even collected traditional music in the city. Even an oasis far away in California was named Biskra Palms to honor this place. Today, it remains an important center for farming and travel.
