It sits right where the Sebou River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This river is very important for the city's work. Ships use the water to move many different things. They carry fruit, fish, and timber to other places. They also move heavy metals like lead and zinc. The city is a main part of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. It is also the capital of the Kénitra Province. As of 2024, more than 507,000 people live there.

The weather in Kenitra follows a Mediterranean pattern. This means the summers are quite hot. On average, there are about 27 days when it stays very warm. The winters are different because they are mild and rainy. It almost never gets freezing cold in the winter. In fact, it only stays below freezing for a tiny fraction of the year. You might see thunder during the rainy months. The city's climate makes it a unique place to live.

Kenitra has a very long and interesting history. A long time ago, an explorer named Hanno built a trading post there. Back then, the place was called Thamusida. Later, in 1912, France began to have more control over Morocco. A leader named Hubert Lyautey helped build a new port. He named it Port Lyautey in 1913. The city got its modern name from a culvert near Fouarat lake. In 1956, the name changed to Quneitra when Morocco became independent.

During the Cold War, the city saw many Americans. In 1942, the United States captured the French fighter base. They called it Craw Field for a short time. Later, it became a large U.S. Naval Air Station. In the 1950s, nearly 10,000 Americans lived on the base. This was a huge number of people for an overseas base. The base was shared by both the U.S. and Morocco. The air station eventually closed in 1991.

Sports and travel are big parts of life in Kenitra today. A local soccer team called KAC was started in 1938. The local people created it to play sports on their own terms. The team became very famous and won many championships. They even won the league in 1960 and again in the 1970s. Many players from this team played for the Moroccan national team. To get around, people use trains and big roads. A high-speed rail line to Tangier was finished in 2018.
