It sits at the mouth of the Sebou River. The city is a central part of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. It also serves as the capital of the Kénitra Province. As of 2024, the city has a population of 507,736 people. Its location makes it a vital hub for maritime and industrial activity.

The city's economy relies heavily on its river port. The industrial area is located upstream from the port itself. Ships use the Sebou River to transport various goods. These include agricultural products like fruit. They also move timber and fish. Heavy metals such as lead and zinc ores are shipped from here as well. This activity keeps the city connected to global trade.

Kénitra has a long history that stretches back to ancient times. An explorer named Hanno founded a trading post in this area. At that time, the location was known as Thamusida. In 1912, the French government and Sultan Abd al-Hafid signed the Treaty of Fez. This changed how Morocco was governed. General Hubert Lyautey was appointed as the resident-general. He worked to restore order and began civilian administration.

General Lyautey focused on building ports along the Atlantic coast. There were few natural harbors in the area. He established Port Lyautey in 1912 as a French military fort and town. The port at the mouth of the Sebou River opened in 1913. It quickly became the best river port in Morocco. The name Kénitra comes from a culvert at Fouarat lake. This culvert was destroyed in 1928. In 1933, the French officially named the area Port Lyautey. After Morocco gained independence in 1956, it was renamed Quneitra.

During World War II, the city became a military site. In November 1942, Americans captured the French fighter base. They named it Craw Field. The 21st Engineer Aviation Regiment worked there for three months. Later, the Seabees of the 120th Naval Construction Battalion took over construction. The Navy ran the base until 1947. In the 1950s, the base grew significantly. Nearly 10,000 people lived on the base during this time. This was the largest group of Americans at any overseas base outside of Japan. The base was shared by the U.S. and Morocco during the Cold War. The U.S. Naval Air Station finally closed in 1991.

The climate in Kénitra is classified as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This is known scientifically as the Köppen Csa classification. Summers are quite warm. On average, there are 27.4 days where the temperature is very high. Winters are mild and often rainy. Sub-freezing temperatures are very rare. They occur only about 0.3 days per year on average. The city can experience thunder during the year. The highest temperature was recorded in August 2003.

Sports play a major role in the local culture. In 1938, local residents founded the Kénitra Athletic Club, or KAC. They created the team to resist French domination in Moroccan sports. The team was made entirely of local people. They reached the premier Moroccan soccer league in 1956. KAC won its first championship in 1960. They won more leagues in 1973, 1981, and 1982. The team plays at the Kenitra Municipal Stadium. This stadium can hold 15,000 people. Many KAC players helped the Moroccan national team reach the World Cup in 1986.

Traveling to and from Kénitra is efficient due to modern infrastructure. National Route 1 and the A1 motorway pass through the city. These roads connect Kénitra to Rabat-Salé and Larache. The city is also served by the Kenitra-Ville railway station. A shuttle train called the TNR runs every 30 minutes. This train connects the city to Rabat and Casablanca. In 2018, a high-speed rail line to Tangier was completed. This makes the city even more accessible for travelers.
