The city has a very long history that began a long time ago. In the first millennium BC, the Phoenicians started trading colonies along this coast. Later, the Romans built a city called Sala Colonia at a place called Chellah. In the 12th century, the Almohads founded the city as a naval base. They called it Ribat al-Fath, which means the stronghold of victory.

They built a large citadel known as the Kasbah of the Udayas. They also started building a huge mosque with a famous tower. This tower is known today as the Hassan Tower.

Over many centuries, the city changed many times. In the 1600s, many refugees from Spain settled in the area. They helped form a republic that became a base for pirates. These pirates were known as the Salé Rovers. Later, the 'Alawi dynasty took control of the region. The kings built beautiful royal residences in the city. One of these is the Dar al-Makhzen palace.

In 1912, France established a protectorate over Morocco. A French leader named Hubert Lyautey chose Rabat as the administrative center. He thought the coast was a pleasant place for the capital. He hired a designer named Henri Prost to build a modern quarter. This area is called the Ville Nouvelle. The city grew very quickly during this time. By 1952, the population had reached about 156,000 people.
