El Kantara

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

El Kantara is a town in the Biskra Province of Algeria. Its name comes from the Latin word for centuriation. In the local Derja language, the name means a bridge.

The town is famous for a deep gorge nearby. Local people call this narrow place the "Mouth of the Desert." The gorge has very high walls. It is a very special part of the land.

This gorge has a very long history. Roman soldiers from the Third Augustan Legion once stayed here. They gave the gorge a special name. They called it Calceus Herculis. This means Hercules' Kick in English. They named it after the hero Hercules. They chose this name because of his great strength.

Ancient people worked hard to build things here. The Roman soldiers built an arched bridge. This bridge goes over a river in the gorge. It helped caravans and military supplies move easily. In the second century A.D., Syrian archers guarded the town. These archers might have planted the first date palm grove. This grove grew in the region long ago.

Many different people call this town home. Some families have Arab origins. These include the Abdelmadjid, Abdelazize, and Bellal families. Other families are the Houfani, Khireddine, and Saadlaoud families. The Souri, Youb, and Zeroug families are also there. Many other families in the town are of Berber origin.

Saïd Chengriha is a known military leader from this place.

Travelers have used this path for a very long time. A guide from 1911 called it a very important caravan station. This station helped travelers move through eastern Algeria. The old Roman road still helps people move today. A modern highway follows the same path. A railroad also follows the ancient way. This shows how important the town remains.
