geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

El Kantara is a town in Algeria. It sits in the Biskra Province. The town is near a deep gorge. Locals call this gorge the "Mouth of the Desert." The gorge is very narrow. Its walls are very high.

Long ago, Roman soldiers came here. They called the gorge Hercules' Kick. This name shows the hero's great strength. The soldiers built an arched bridge. This bridge goes over a river. It helped caravans move goods easily. In the second century, Syrian archers guarded the town. People think they planted the first date palm trees.

Today, the town is still busy. An old Roman road runs through it. A highway and a railroad follow this path. Many families live in El Kantara. Some families have Arab roots. Other families are Berber. Saïd Chengriha is a known military leader from here. The town was once a very important stop for travelers.
